A new study published in the European Respiratory Journal has found that randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of biological therapies in severe asthma are poorly generalisable, with most patients excluded by outdated disease concepts, despite possessing the targetable trait addressed by the treatment. The current issue of ERJ Open Research includes a study that investigates the association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the development of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Natalie Terzikhan and co-authors found that individuals with COPD have an almost doubled risk of developing PAD; people suffering from both diseases were found to have substantially higher mortality rates.
