With over 10 million new cases and 1.6 million deaths, tuberculosis (TB) is a global health priority. Despite extensive investigation over the years, there is still a great deal to learn about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB. The latest ERS Monograph brings together chapters from global TB experts and begins with a patients' perspective that sets the tone. Chapters that follow include: the history of TB; epidemiology; strategies for control and elimination; clinical and laboratory diagnosis; imaging; treatment and drugs; TB in different patient populations; comorbidities; and clinical cases. Detection of mild cognitive impairment in OSA
Obstructive sleep apnoea increases the risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. A study in the November issue of the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ) characterises the ability of two screening tests, the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, to detect mild cognitive impairment in adults aged 55–85 years with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The study concluded that the Montreal Cognitive Assessment performs best and can be used in the clinical setting (though neuropsychological referral is preferable where neurodegenerative processes are suspected).
