Pleural malignancies

On 25 January 2024, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) will hold a panel discussion on pleural malignancies. Chaired by Professor Najib M. Rahman and Dr Avinash Aujayeb, topics covered will include: the case for early biopsy and avoiding initial cytology; the biology and growth potential of pleural fluid; and the optimal use of indwelling pleural catheters.

Breathe: Management of pleural disease

The latest issue of Breathe focuses on diagnosing and managing pleural disease, with review articles looking at diagnosis and management of malignant pleural effusions in resource-constrained settings and the tuberculous pleural effusion. The journal club focuses on trials investigating antimicrobial strategies and the use of oral corticosteroids in pleural infection.

ERS CRC Child-BEAR-net publishes study

The ERS CRC Child-BEAR-net has recently published a study in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine that is the first core outcome set for paediatric bronchiectasis. The paper is entitles "A core outcome set for bronchiectasis in children and adolescents for use in clinical research: an international consensus study", and aims to work towards improved clinical care and outcomes.

New podcast: Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System

 "There's always someone who knows more about a rare disease than you yourself"

Coordinator of ERN-LUNG Thomas Wagner and his co-Guest Editor Michael Kreuter talk to Deputy Chief Editor of the ERS Monograph, Christian Laursen, about their issue: Rare Diseases of the Respiratory System. The editors explain how knowledge exchange through the Network, as well as reference to the Monograph, is beneficial to trainees, experts and patients alike. Christian also asks the Guest Editors about major breakthroughs of the last 10 years, possible future developments, their recommendations to young researchers, and the ways in which they support their patients in daily practice.

Weaning from mechanical ventilation: lessons learned from WEAN SAFE

WEAN SAFE is a European Respiratory Society (ERS) co-funded clinical research collaboration of 50 countries and 500 intensive care units from around the globe. Its aim is to investigate the epidemiology, practice and outcome of weaning from mechanical ventilation. On 5 December, ERS held a webinar that discussed the findings and implications of the first WEAN SAFE results. With Giacomo Bellani, Margaret Herridge and John Laffey amongst the speakers, the webinar is invaluable to pulmonologists, nurses and clinical scientists alike.

An update on post-COVID lung fibrosis

On 4 December, an ERS Vision Live panel discussion provided an update on post-COVID lung fibrosis. Chaired by David Montani and Katerina Antoniou, and featuring expert speakers Anh Tuan Dinh-Xuan, Bruno Crestani and Marialuisa Bocchino, the panel discussion considered key areas, including molecular biology, lung imaging, and the prevalence and outcomes of post-COVID fibrosis.

Fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis and unclassifiable interstitial lung disease patients who have age-adjusted leukocyte telomere length below the 10th percentile may experience reduced survival when exposed to immunosuppression, similar to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients.

Chest MRI in clinical practice

On 18 December, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Society of Paediatric Radiology (ESPR) will hold a joint webinar entitled "Chest MRI in clinical practice: a problem-solving approach". Aimed at paediatric pulmonologists and paediatric radiologists, this webinar will detail instances where using chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) proves more advantageous than computed tomography (CT), whether it is in diagnosing conditions or monitoring treatment efficacy.

The Chief Editors of the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ) have selected their highlights from the November issue. COP28: climate crisis is a health crisis

More than 60 medical, public health and scientific societies, patient representative organisations and experts have called for decision makers at COP28 to prioritise action to mitigate and adapt to the health effects of climate change and to prepare societies and communities for a "much more complex future". The organisations have called for comprehensive action in a joint statement initiated by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF).
