ERS CRC Child-BEAR-net publishes study
The ERS CRC Child-BEAR-net has recently published a study in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine that is the first core outcome set for paediatric bronchiectasis. The paper is entitles "A core outcome set for bronchiectasis in children and adolescents for use in clinical research: an international consensus study", and aims to work towards improved clinical care and outcomes.

Weaning from mechanical ventilation: lessons learned from WEAN SAFE
WEAN SAFE is a European Respiratory Society (ERS) co-funded clinical research collaboration of 50 countries and 500 intensive care units from around the globe. Its aim is to investigate the epidemiology, practice and outcome of weaning from mechanical ventilation. On 5 December, ERS held a webinar that discussed the findings and implications of the first WEAN SAFE results. COP28: climate crisis is a health crisis
More than 60 medical, public health and scientific societies, patient representative organisations and experts have called for decision makers at COP28 to prioritise action to mitigate and adapt to the health effects of climate change and to prepare societies and communities for a "much more complex future". The organisations have called for comprehensive action in a joint statement initiated by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Lung Foundation (ELF).

A new dawn in the fight against TB: UNITE4TB starts phase 2 clinical trials
On 8 November 2023, leading tuberculosis (TB) drug developer, UNITE4TB, of which the European Respiratory Society (ERS) is a consortium member, announced the start of its phase 2B/C clinical trial programme, with the first participant enrolled at its trial site in Cappe Town, South Africa. These trials are a major milestone for the TB community.

Clean air in Europe: no delay, no exemptions, no more pollution

Irritants and airborne pollutants in adult asthma
Medical education is generally deficient in teaching environmental and occupational determinants of human health in general, and respiratory health in particular. And yet the impact of these factors on respiratory health is increasingly evident and pressing, given recent environmental disasters. On 26 October, ERS will hold a panel discussion that will consider the incontrovertible contribution of irritants and allergens in the environment and the workplace, to the causation, aggravation, and perpetuation of asthma throughout the world.

Paediatric bronchiectasis is a hot topic due to increasing awareness in children and adolescents. On 16 October, ERS and ESPR will hold a joint webinar that will cover the definition, pathogenesis and underlying cases, radiological findings and treatment of paediatric bronchiectasis. Cases with paediatric bronchiectasis will be demonstrated with MCQs, giving participants the opportunity to enrich their knowledge.

Novel advances in the diagnosis of ILDs
On 12 October, a joint ERS–ALAT webinar will look at novel advances in the diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs). The webinar will cover the importance of the usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern, the role of cryobiopsy in the diagnosis of fibrotic ILD, and genomic classifiers as a diagnostic tool to identify the UIP pattern in clinical practice.

Antifibrotic medication is increasingly complex. Add-on treatments are in clinical trials, or available, for patients progressing on first-line idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis or progressive fibrosis interstitial lung disease therapy. European Respiratory Review: pick of the week
Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy seems to significantly improve glycated haemoglobin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnoea. The amount of improvement is associated with the duration of CPAP use, so optimal adherence to CPAP should be a primary goal in these patients.

ERJ issues call for high-quality research papers on post-COVID syndrome
In response to the global challenge posed by post-COVID syndrome, or "long COVID", the European Respiratory Journal (ERJ) is calling for new submissions on long COVID, post-COVID syndrome and the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly with regard to the pulmonary system. Preference will be given to papers that are clinical trials, provide mechanistic insight to its pathophysiology, or provide new knowledge on its clinical course or endophenotypes.

The European Respiratory Society (ERS) has outlined climate change occurrences that cause a clear and major threat to respiratory patients worldwide.
